What is a bedtime routine, anyway?

Think about the last time you came home from an event super late, way past the time you normally go to bed, and tell me - did you collapse into bed within 5 minutes of getting home?

Probably not.

The mind needs time to separate from the daytime activities, rhythms, and thoughts before transitioning into sleep. Bedtime routine, wind- down time, pre-bed rituals… whatever you call it, most of my clients are going to tell me that they don’t prioritize this, and some tell me they don’t have a bedtime routine at all!

However, when I dig deeper, I usually find that every person has some sort of method to detach from the day and get into their sleep.

The most surprising part of the conversation is when I let the client know that an effective bedtime routine is 45 minutes long - a lot longer than they’d thought.

Specifically for those struggling with racing thoughts and sleep anxiety, a bedtime routine is a key ingredient for restoring quality sleep and smooth transition into the delicious slumber we all crave.

So, what’s the secret to crafting a successful bedtime routine?

First, pinpoint your perfect time to got to bed. Subtract 45-60 minutes, and make a list of activities you’d like to integrate into your nightly routine. This could include anything from a warm, relaxing shower and a book to soft, calming music, meditation, or a bit of journaling to reflect on your day. I like to include time to make a plan for the next day - this helps me sort out my thoughts and feel calm and prepared.

Set an alarm or reminder that gently nudges you to start winding down. When it rings, it’s your signal to power off screens and begin winding down. Gradually make your way to your bedroom and begin preparing for a restful night.

Remember, this time is for you to unwind and let go. Enjoy this pocket of time, allowing yourself the luxury to pause, breathe, and reflect.

Keep tweaking as you go, this is a totally personal process!
